Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
If your baby is happy, calm, feeding well and the only issue is green stools (not diarrhea, i.e. not watery stools in large amounts that happen more than 5 times a day), then there is no reason to worry.
If you have recently switched from exclusive breast feeding to formula, this may explain it. Usually a formula-feeding baby will have bowel movements that are tan or yellow in color, but it is normal for your formula-fed baby poop color to vary from tan-brown to green-brown to yellow-brown. You will also notice that its consistency is firmer than the stool of a breastfed infant. Its smell is also “stronger” than that of breastfed babies.
Sometimes stools can go green for a couple of days due to a medication you are taking such as antibiotics or iron supplements (in case you’re still breast feeding along with giving your baby formula milk), some food you ate, or it just happens and has no clinical significance – as long as no other alarming signs or symptoms occur along with it (like the baby getting too fussy, crying more than usual, not feeding well or sleeping too much).
