Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
Single umbilical artery (SUA) is the most common malformation of the umbilical cord. On its own, SUA does not necessarily pose a risk to you or your child as an umbilical cord with just one artery is sufficient to support a pregnancy to term.
However, SUA does increase your child’s risk for certain birth defects.

Normally, when the umbilical cord develops, it forms three vessels: two arteries and one vein. However, in some cases, just one artery develops. Precisely why this occurs is not entirely known. It is suspected, though, that one artery may simply stop growing as it develops or perhaps that the primordial umbilical artery does not divide properly.

About 1 percent of singleton and about 5 percent of multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets or more) have an umbilical cord that contains only two blood vessels, instead of the normal three. In these cases, one artery is missing . The cause of this abnormality, called single umbilical artery, is unknown

Other factors that may increase your risk:

Advanced maternal age (over 40)
Having 3 or more previous children
Diabetes
Female fetal sex
multiple pregnancies .

SO having one child with umbilical defecit

However, the most common pregnancy complications that occur in infants with SUA are heart defects, gastrointestinal tract abnormalities and problems with the central nervous system. The respiratory system, urinary tract, and musculoskeletal system may also be affected.

In 25%, the baby may have abnormalities of the heart, skeletal system, and kidneys among other things. Your doctor may want to send you for a higher level ultrasound study for a more intensive fetal survey evaluation. If other problems are found then genetic counseling is often obtained .
Remember, in 75% there are no problems

However ,the risk of having a child with a similar problem could be as low as 3 out of 100
