Is there treatment for low testosterone
Aug 23, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Testosterone replacement therapy is given to cases of documented low testosterone (less than 300 ng/dL). Low testosterone leads to male hypogonadism (or poor sex organ function). It is classified as primary (where the testicles themselves fail to synthesize enough testosterone), or secondary (due to disease in the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that orchestrates many functions in the body, or disease in the pituitary gland, the gland seated beneath the brain and is responsible for regulating the function of other glands in the body).
Primary cases can result from mumps orchitis (the mumps virus gets into the testes), trauma, stress, and aging.
Secondary causes include pituitary tumors (including benign tumors), obesity, certain medications, and stress.
Hypogonadism leads to regression of secondary sexual characteristics (hair and voice), poor libido, erectile dysfunction, and fat accumulation around the abdomen.
