Is there any type of medication that can cure recurring mood swings?
Mar 17, 2013

Dr. Georges Karam Psychiatry
It is important to understand what you mean by mood swings.
Mood swings can be part of Bipolar disorder. Bipolar which is sometimes called manic-depressive disorder and associated with mood swings that range from the lows of depression to the highs of mania. When you become depressed, you may feel sad or hopeless and lose interest or pleasure in most activities. When your mood shifts in the other direction, you may feel euphoric and full of energy. Mood shifts may occur only a few times a year, or as often as several times a day. In some cases, bipolar disorder causes symptoms of depression and mania at the same time.
If you suffer from bipolar disorder, you need to be on "mood regulators". Several medications belong to that class.
Mood swings however can also be part of others disorders and it is very important to be accurately diagnosed BEFORE you take a medication for mood swings.
