Is ST elevation always suggestive of heart problem
Jan 24, 2016

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
ST segment elevation is most commonly indicative of deep heart muscle damage, resulting from altered blood flow to the muscles as a result of coronary artery disease, or because of infection, or drugs, among other causes.
In a few patients, mainly young men under the age of 50, however, there is an entity called benign early repolarization (BER). BER is a electrocardiogram (ECG) pattern most commonly seen in young, healthy patients. Up to 10-15% of patients who visit the emergency room with chest pain will have BER on their ECG. The physiological basis of BER is poorly understood. However, it is generally thought to be a normal variant that is not indicative of underlying cardiac disease.
