Is it true that you vomit after waking up from anaesthesia? Why is that?
Feb 28, 2013

Dr. Jean Esso Anesthesiology
Vomiting after awakening from anesthesia results from drugs given during anesthesia, type of surgery, and patient related factors.
It seems that the use of volatile anesthesia, a type of anesthesia delivered by inhalation and the use of morphinic medications play a major role in causing nausea and vomiting after surgery.
Gynecological, urological, strabismus, middle ear surgery and all surgeries done by laparoscopy have a higher risk of vomiting after anesthesia.
Patients that are female and young are at greater risk. Smokers have a decreased risk, Older patients suffer less nausea and vomiting after surgery.
Obesity, children, history of motion sickness and high levels of pre-operative anxiety are also risk factors for this problem after anesthesia.
