Is it safe to use Vitamine C serum daily on your face (summer and winter) with sunscreen?
Aug 22, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Yes it's alright to use vitamin C creams during the day with sunscreen - the vitamin that usually causes darkening of the skin upon sun exposure is Vitamin A. But before you do, you need to be aware of the following:
In order to achieve and maintain adequate vitamin C levels, you need to eat on average more than 5 servings of fruit, vegetables and juices daily.
There are many topical vitamin C preparations available that claim to fight wrinkles induced by sun damage. However, almost all of these claims are not based on solid scientific research.
A correctly formulated topical vitamin C preparation is a difficult and costly process. Many preparations on the market are manufactured cheaply and are ineffective. The is due to the fact that vitamin C is mostly found in the form L-ascorbic acid, which is a highly unstable when exposed to oxygen, rendering it useless. In addition, many of the currently available topical vitamin C preparations do not penetrate the skin deep enough to produce any effect.
