Is it bad to take a medicine to reduce monthly period pain? Is there any way to reduce the pain without taking medicine?
Aug 10, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
No drug is without side effects, but when the benefits of therapy outweigh the risks, it shouldn't be a problem. Menstrual cramps can be bothersome; usually treated with anti inflammatory drugs.
Adjusting your diet may also help. A low-fat, high-fiber diet can significantly reduce estrogen levels. When you reduce your fat intake by 50%, your estrogen level will drop by ~20%; a lower hormone level will have less effect on the uterine cells. In addition, low-fat diet may also be beneficial because high-fiber vegetables, beans, fruits, and whole grains help the body eliminate estrogens.
Estrogen is normally carried from the bloodstream by the liver through a small tube, called the bile duct, into the intestinal tract. There, fiber soaks it up like a sponge and carries it out with other waste. The more fiber there is in the diet, the better the natural “estrogen disposal system” works.
Since animal products do not contain fiber, a diet rich in animal products will hinder proper estrogen disposal. So, by avoiding animal products and added oils, estrogen production is reduced. And by replacing chicken, skim milk, and other non-fiber foods with grains, beans, and vegetables, estrogen elimination is increased.
Another mechanism in menstrual pain is prostaglandins (inflammation markers) which cause irritation & pain. These are what anti inflammatory drugs like Advil work against to relieve menstrual pain.
Have plenty of:
Flaxseed: Studies show that flaxseed can inhibit the release of certain prostaglandins by providing omega-3. Add 1-2 teaspoons of ground flaxseed daily over cereal or salad, or in a smoothie.
Whole-grain foods
Fennel tea: add cinnamon sticks &drink warm.
Avoid red meat and dairy products as these contain arachadonic acid which triggers the production of prostaglandins and thus increase menstrual cramps.
