Is cigar bad for your health?
Jan 5, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Large cigars typically contain between 5 and 20 grams of tobacco. Some brands contain the tobacco equivalent of an entire pack of cigarettes. Large cigars may require between 1 and 2 hours to smoke.
Cigar smoke and cigarette smoke alike contain toxic chemicals that cause cancer and are health hazards to both smokers and nonsmokers (second hand smoking) . Cigar smoke is even said to be more toxic than cigarette smoke. Cigar smoke contains:

A higher level of cancer-causing substances: the fermentation process for cigar tobacco leads to the formation of high concentrations of nitrosamines , compounds that are released when a cigar is smoked and found in higher concentration in cigar smoke than in cigarette smoke. Nitrosamines are notorious for causing cancer.

More tar: For every gram of tobacco smoked, there is more cancer-causing tar in cigars than in cigarettes.

A higher level of toxins: Cigar wrappers are less porous than cigarette wrappers; this renders the burning of cigar tobacco less complete than the burning of cigarette tobacco. The result is higher concentrations of toxins in cigar smoke has in cigarette smoke.

Moreover, the fact that most cigars are larger in size (hence more tobacco) and take longer time to be smoked, there's higher exposure to many toxic substances ( ammonia, carbon monoxide, cadmium and other substances).

Cigar smoking causes cancer of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus, and lung. It may also cause cancer of the pancreas. Not to mention the increased risk for heart disease and other types of lung disease in daily cigar smokers, mainly those who inhale. Regular cigar smokers and cigarette smokers have similar levels of risk for oral cavity and esophageal cancers. The more you smoke, the greater the risk of disease.

Cigar smoke is classified as a major source of indoor air pollution. And knowing that there is no cutoff safety level of exposure to tobacco smoke, the only way to reduce tobacco-associated heath hazards is by not smoking.
