Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Normal ferritin levels for an adult female should range between 12-150 ng/mL; normal total serum iron levels should fall within 60-170 mcg/dL; normal vitamin B12 levels are within 200-900 pg/mL.
As you can conclude from the above, your ferritin level, which reflects the reservoir of iron in your body, is on the low side of the normal range. The same applies to your serum total iron level. As for vitamin B12 level, it still has not become low because the body usually has a large reservoir of vitamin B12 that is not quickly depleted.
Obviously, you need to enrich your diet in sources of iron (other than meat) in order to avoid developing iron-deficiency anemia, and other health problems that result from iron deficiency, including:
  • lack of energy or tiredness
  • extreme fatigue and feeling of weakness
  • light headedness
  • headache
  • pale skin on the lining of the eyes, the inner mouth and the nails
  • rapid and forceful heartbeat
  • low blood pressure with position change from sitting to standing up
  • finger nails that become thin, brittle and white – they may grow abnormally and get a spoon-shaped appearance
  • tongue may become sore, smooth and reddened
  • decrease in appetite
  • shortness of breath during exercise
  • brittle hair
  • reduction in immunity and increased vulnerability to infection

It is also a good idea to take iron and vitamin B12 supplements, especially because in the reproductive age group and lose blood during your menstrual period.
