Stretch marks (medical term: striae) are fine lines on the skin that appear when tissue under the skin gets torn due to rapid growth or over-stretching. This is a rather common condition that is medically inconsequential, but can be of cosmetic concern for some people. Other names for stretch marks are striae distensae, striae atrophicans, striae rubra (which are red) and striae alba (white).
Stretch marks are very common; as many as 70% of adolescent girls and 40% of boys have stretch marks. Certain areas of the body, where skin is subjected to continuous and progressive stretching, have a higher predilection to develop stretch marks. These include:
Abdomen and breast in pregnant women
Adolescents undergoing growth spurts (thighs, buttocks, breasts)
Shoulders in body-builders
Obese or overweight people
Stretch marks can also result from prolonged use of oral or topical corticosteroids and from anabolic steroids.
Stretch marks usually are only a cosmetic problem. In rare instances however, if they are extensive, they may ulcerate or tear easily in an accident. Stretch marks occurring in adolescents become less prominent over time and generally require no treatment. In other cases, if stretch marks are a cause of concern then the following treatments may be attempted, but results are not 100% full proof:
Moisturising oils
Topical retinoid therapy
Chemical peels
Pulsed dye laser therapy
Fractional thermolysis
Skin needling

Annual Checkup
It is recommended that all individuals see a Family Doctor for a full medical examination annually. Adults should get their blood pressure checked (US Preventive Task Force), a flu vaccine (CDC) and more each year.
The American Dental Association recommends dental cleanings for adults at least twice annually. Some stains can only be removed by a professional cleaning.
It’s recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology that every adult between the ages of 18 and 80 does an eye examination at least once every two years.
It's recommended by the American Cancer Association that every adult between the age of 20 and 80 does an annual skin screening by a licensed dermatologist.
