Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Anapolon is Oxymetholone, an androgen hormone. It works by increasing the production of erythropoietin, a chemical in the body that increases the production of red blood cells. It is used for treating certain types of anemia, such as aplastic anemia.

Women on this medication (both young girls and women) may experience signs of virilization, or masculinization. These changes may be irreversible. As such, when on treatment, women should be observed for signs of virilization (deepening of the voice, hirsutism, acne and clitoromegaly -enlargement of the clitoris-). To prevent irreversible change, drug therapy must be withheld (if judged feasible by the treating physician) when mild virilism is first detected. Such virilization is usual following androgenic anabolic steroid use at high doses. Some virilizing changes in women are irreversible even after prompt discontinution of therapy and cannot be prevented by concomitant use of estrogens. Menstrual irregularities, including amenorrhea (complete absence of menstruation), may also occur.
