If someone loses the water of the neck's and back's disks, does it mean that his height will be affected and he will get shorter? thanks
Jul 25, 2014

Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
Losing water in the discs is a degenerating process in the intervertebral disc, and thus the condition is called degenerative disc disease (DDD).
During DDD the “jelly center” of the disc dries progressively out over time, healthy discs are thick and flexible (like a wet sponge) allowing a wide range of bending and twisting motions. An unhealthy disc is stiff and hard (like a dry sponge) ,over time gravity, spinal joint dysfunction and accumulated trauma cause the discs to compress, flatten and degenerate, compressing will reduce the height in the spine over time and thus unfortunately become shorter.
For the same reason people get shorter when they age due to the loss of water in the discs the distance between vertebrae begin to collapse.
