If i breastfeed a baby 3 to 4 times a day will my body keep on producing milk?
Nov 14, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The duration that the breasts continue to produce breast milk varies from one woman to another. While breast feeding, the most powerful stimulant of breast milk production is the suckling of the baby that increases the level of prolactin (the milk producing hormone) and keeps the production of milk going.
Once you stop breast feeding and your breasts are no longer being stimulated, the prolactin level in the blood falls, and milk production ceases.
Of course, adequate nutrition and hydration are necessary to prolong breast milk production; women who initiate weight loss efforts to shed off their baby weight early after they give birth (within a few months after delivery) tend to have a shorter duration of breast milk production.
