Dr. Rania Mousa General Medicine
Pain on one side of the head is called unilateral pain
depending on what other symptoms you are suffering from and according to pain description you are suffering from the answer will be .
You describe a unilateral pain which could mean several possibilities and the differential diagnosis would be for different conditions .
That could be a migraine if you feel this episodic unilateral thrubbing pain ,i mean you feel the pain only on one side and the pain is thrubbing ,and have a duration of about 2 and more hours and then settle away and then return again after a hours, days , or months depending on the severity ,the migraine pain might have other symptoms like light sensitivity ,eye pain ,naseau ,vomiting after the headache finished ,fear of light or photophobia where you feel uncomfortable with light, bothered from certain smells or smoke ,....one or more of these symptoms might point to migraine head attacks .
Other possibilty is trigeminal neuralgia,a neuropathic disorder characterized by episodes of intense pain in the face, originating from the trigeminal nerve. This disorder is characterized by episodes of intense facial pain that last from a few seconds to several minutes or hours. The episodes of intense pain may occur paroxysmally. To describe the pain sensation, patients may describe a trigger area on the face so sensitive that touching or even air currents can trigger an episode; however, in many patients the pain is generated spontaneously without any apparent stimulation. It affects lifestyle as it can be triggered by common activities such as eating, talking, shaving and brushing teeth. Wind, high pitched sounds, loud noises such as concerts or crowds, chewing, and talking can aggravate the condition in many patients. The attacks are said by those affected to feel like stabbing electric shocks, burning, pressing, crushing, exploding or shooting pain that becomes intractable.
if you are taking recently any drug or medicine it may be the cause too.
if you suffer from other symptoms in your body like weakness in muscles and face dropping or any other change beside this head pain it might be a more serious problem .
Many causes might be ,so my advice ,is to check with your doctor so that he can make physical exam and ask about your symptoms and if needed order tests to know the cause and give gthe appropriate treatment .
