I take a daily dose of magnesium, calcium, iron, when is the best time to take vitamins?
Mar 7, 2013

Dr. Thierry Yazbek Surgery
• for calcium citrate, you can take it with or without food. If the supplement contains calcium carbonate, take it with food. Stomach acid produced while eating helps the absorption of calcium carbonate. take your calcium supplements at a different time from your multivitamin or an iron-rich meal. Calcium may not be absorbed as well if it's taken at the same time as iron, zinc or magnesium
• for iron, absorption of iron is better at a low pH (an acid environment), and resorption is decreased if there is a simultaneous intake of antacids.
• Taken after a meal, there are fewer side effects but there is also less absorption because of interaction and pH alteration. Generally, an interval of 2–3 hours between the iron intake and that of other drugs seems advisable.
• for Mg,take your magnesium supplement on an empty stomach. Sometimes the food in your stomach can interfere with your body's ability to absorb magnesium.
