I Started smoking 3 and a half weeks post rhinoplasty I just couldnt hold myself anymore! what are the effects and risk of smoking during healing process?
Aug 13, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Smoking impedes the blood supply to the surgery site as it constricts the blood vessels, which in turnhinders the delivery of adequate amounts of oxygen The result is an overall delay in the healing process. Necrosis (tissue death and degeneration) , skin loss and scarring are other side effects of smoking before and after the procedure. Other possible complications that smoking after rhinoplasty can cause are:
Obstructed airway
Asymmetry of the nose
Bleeding that might last 4 weeks
Smoking may not directly affect the outcome of nose surgery in terms of esthetics. but it will affect healing process by triggering the synthesis of soft tissue or more scar tissue on one side of the nose.
It is therefore strongly recommended to avoid orat least minimize smoking prior to and after the surgery till the wounds heal completely.
