Dr. Pierre Mardelli Ophthalmology
Myasthenia Gravis is a chronic autoimmune condition that interferes with proper nerve transmission in the skeletal muscles, causing selective muscle weakness. This weakness is caused by a deficiency in a chemical (neurotransmitter) that is released from the nerve ending to stimulate a receptor on the associated muscle causing it to contract. The ocular manifestations of myasthenia gravis include ptosis (drooping or falling of the upper or lower eyelid) and diplopia (double vision). Patients may also complain of limited eye movements. Muscle stimulants and other systemic medications may help. Check with an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) before.

Pierre G. Mardelli
