I recently read an article that contraceptive pills such as Yaz, Yasmine and others, have killed around 23 women worldwide. Should we stop using them? And why this sudden reaction to these pills?

one should always be certain when reading these articles that there is ne bias..or theere is no conflict of interest..
in the majority of cases in the drug market, when they want to release a new drug..they tend to create some issues about a similar drug in the same category..so it can be withdrawn from the market..
as for a GYN point's of view:
the common in these OCP (oral contraceptive pills) - yasmin & yaz- are the progesterone part, the DROSPIRENONE,
it has been shown that this type of progesterone( called 4th generation) is associated with more DVT and coagulation disorder - though it is very low- and this is when compared to earlier OCP..
the fact behind this, is that 4th g progesterone have anti androgenic effect, as opposed to the previous ones..and this type of progesterone was associated with these coagulation problem..
although this is rare... but it happened to people who are predisposed to coagulation disorder..like any other OCP..
take home message: if you used to take yasmin or yaz for many years..with no problem..continue on them
when prescribing OCP, we should consider other tahn the 4th G ones
