Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Injuries and trauma to the jaw result in jaw pain. The chin constitutes part of the lower jaw. Pain may be felt on the same side of trauma (injury or blow), or on the opposite side, depending on the direction of the blow. The extent of damage to the jaw depend on the mechanics of the blow and range from minor bruising to a fracture or dislocation.
If the trauma is minor, then healing should occur without any major interventions within a few days.
Symptoms include:
- Pain: it is the hallmark of jaw trauma.
- Swelling and bruising may be seen.
- Teeth may not fit align properly with resulting difficulty in chewing.
- Some degree of numbness due to bruising of nearby nerves.
Treatment options are:
- Ice compresses to reduce pain and inflammation (redness and swelling).
- Painkillers also to reduce pain and inflammation.
- Imaging test such as x-ray or CT is indicated in cases of suspected fracture. This requires examination by a physician.
