I only get killer pain the left side of my face when i'm coming down the mountains or landing in the plane, normal days i am quite fine I feel nothing, my nose is clear and my ears are fine.

This pain is usually due to blockage in the paranasal sinuses region .Try to take oral and nasal decongestant 30 minutes prior to the sudden change in altitude and see how it works .You should then do a CT scan of the paranasal sinuses (axial and coronal cut) and show it to your ENT .
