These blood studies are done in case there are known risk factors in your family for bleeding or exaggerated blood clotting, to know if you too have such risk factors which play a role in cardiovascular disease and pregnancy (recurrent unexplained pregnancy loss can have as underlying cause a state of thrombophilia in thebblood, ie blood that forms a lot of clots).
Normally, there is a fine balance in the body which ensures that there is not too much bleeding or blood clotting. If this balance is disrupted, a blood clot may occur. In response to injury, the body naturally triggers the “clotting cascade”—a sequence of events that allows the blood cells (platelets) and clotting proteins to respond to the site of the injury to clog up the vessel and stop bleeding, and then to repair it. in a person with thrombophilia, blood clotting proteins exist in abnormal amounts, so that the clotting overshoots and a big blood clot may form.
Homozygous for factor XIII, one of the proteins in the clotting cascade, signifies a tendency to bleed (not clot). Heterozygous for Factor II (another clotting cascade protein)
