I'm eighteen and my period is not coming regularly since I first got it? Should I be worried?
Jan 14, 2013

Dr. Karim Nawfal Obstetrics & Gynecology
It depends what you mean by "not coming regularly"
At the age of 18 you definitely should have a consultation with a gynecologist, you have a lot to discuss.
During this consultation an assessment can be made of your menstrual pattern and if it is abnormal you will have studies done.
One common cause of menstrual irregularity (infrequent periods) is polycystic ovary syndrome and this can be investigated with tests and should be treated.

Ovulatory dysfunction and sress are common causes of irregular menses . If the patient has a weight -control problem , like obesity or she manifests biological markers of excess androgen like acne, hirsutism , oily skin , or frequent use of anxiolytics or has a stressful life conditions , then the treatment should attend to the underlying cause .
