I lost my smelling sense for a period of more than 6 months and still, what is the cause and what is your advise, although my nasal x ray revealed no inflammation

Dr. Jihad Achkar Otolaryngology (ENT)
Anosmia (decreased sense of smell) can be hard to treat and of unknown reasons sometimes. Common treatable causes include sinus infections (acute or chronic), nasal allergies, and viral upper respiratory tract infections. Other (harder to treat) causes are due to olfactory nerve damage (post head trauma, post viral infections, tumors on the nerve). Tumors can be ruled out by MRI brain. Post viral anosmia may be treated with high dose steroids with good results if within first month of symptoms. At this point, you need to have nasal endoscopy for proper nasal evaluation, if not done yet, and a brain MRI.
