Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
If you have a cat, have it checked for Toxoplasma. In case it has an active infection, ask someone outside your household to look after of it until you're further along in your pregnancy (the risk of toxoplasma crossing the placenta becomes low after the 6th month of gestation).
If your cat is not infected, just make sure they don't eat raw meat, and keep them inside so as to avoid their exposure to other cats, mice or birds that might be infected. The litter box must be cleaned daily, but NOT by you because cat waste may carry toxoplasma.
If you do gardening, make sure that the soil is not contaminated with cat feces. Always wear gloves.
Other sources of toxoplasma include:
1- fruits and vegetables, so wash them with soap followed by Presept (The ground they fall on before harvest might be contaminated.)
2 - meat: cook very well and always wear gloves when handling meat, and clean all kitchen counters and utensils exposed to the meat.
