I have allergies and when I don't get enough sleep (3-4 hours only), I cough intensively even if I am not exposed to something I am allergic to. Why?

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
This is because it is the allergic symptoms themselves, when they flare up, that negatively affect your sleep quality, and not the other way around. Basically, when you have, say, a bad nasal obstruction associated with a post-nasal drip (the phlegm goes backwards from your nasal cavity into your throat), your breathing will be disordered, so you'll be mostly breathing through your mouth. This is and by itself will disturb your sleep and diminish the quality of your sleep, while concomitantly worsening your baseline allergic cough, because the secretions cause irritation in the throat. The allergic symptoms are not always triggered by an identifiable allergic agent; many times, variations in the climate, and things that are invisible to the naked eye such as dust mites, precipitate allergic responses.
You need to figure out what triggers allergic systems in your system by undergoing the skin allergy test. Avoidance is key; chronic treatments, such as oral anti-histamines, intra-nasal steroids (if you have allergy in the nose and sinuses), and maybe other medications may be required.
