First and foremost, two things need to be ruled out:
-drug side effects: some medications may cause a dry mouth and a sense of thirst. If you're on chronic medication, make sure if this is one of the side effects mentioned on the insert
-diabetes mellitus: a family history of early onset diabetes may raise the suspicion of this disorder, which causes polydypsia (excessive drinking of fluids), polyuria (passing a lot of urine) as early symptoms. Doing a fasting blood sugar level is thus recommended.
Other entities that could explain excessive thirst are diabetes insipidus, or primary polydipsia.
Diabetes insipidus (DI) results from either a lack of a hormone that is usually released from the brain, or from a kidney problem (the kidney cannot concentrate urine). Patients with this condition pass huge amounts of dilute urine. Diagnosis requires a special test known as the water deprivation test, during which the patient is deprived completely from water and all fluids for about 18 hrs, after which plasma and urine osmolality (how dense they are) is measured. If urine is diluted while plasma is concentrated, the test is positive. To distinguish between brain vs kidney source of the disease, this is followed by administration of ADH (the lacking hormone). If urine concentration increases, this means the problem resides in the brain. Otherwise it's a kidney issue.
Primary or psychogenic polydypsia is associated with psychiatric disorders and requires a specialist in the field for proper evaluation and management.
