Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
The tooth and composed of two main layers: the enamel (hard outer layer) and the dentine (softer inner layer with microscopic tube like structures). The lancinating pain you get is when food or drink gets in contact with the dentine layer of the tooth. Common causes include:
-Grinding your teeth: if you have this habit, grinding will exert stress on the enamel and cause it to wear off, thereby exposing the dentine.
-Tooth brushing: directly after eating or drinking, especially acidic foods or drinks, the enamel softens and the dentine becomes more vulnerable, so tooth brushing induces pain.
-Gingivitis: or inflammatory disease of the gums (gingiva). If unattended to, it progresses to affect the bone structure supporting the teeth and damages the nerve as well (periondontitis).
-Receding gums: this is a complication of gingivitis in which the gums shrink with resulting exposure of the dentine.
What to do?
-Visit your dentist to rule out gum disease and treat it if it's present.
-don't brush too vigorously
-brush in the correct fashion: start from the gums down on the teeth in regular strokes - avoid circular or horizontal brushing
-use ultra soft toothbrush and toothpaste especially for sensitive teeth
-avoid acidic foods as they wear off the enamel, or gargle well immediately after acidic foods or beverages.
