Dec 30, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Unless you have a chronic condition that makes your immune system vulnerable to easily catch bacteria, you do not need to start taking antibiotics for a simple cold. Common cold is caused by a myriad of viruses, and viruses are not treated with antibiotics. It takes 5-7 days for a common cold to resolve. The best intervention is drinking as much fluids as you can. Nasal saline spray is helpful in clearing up your nasal secretions and relieving any nasal blockage. To reduce the cough, herbal teas and honey are good choices - if the cough is very non-remitting you may want to get a cough medication (anti-tussive). If your symptoms keep getting worse after a few days, such as you start having fever, you will need to visit your doctor.
