Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
These are ear tags, or as we doctors like to call them, preauricular tags (pre: in front, auricular: ear related). These are benign congenital malformations (you are born with them); in rare cases they may be associated with congenital kidney diseases (like polycystic kidney, where the kidney looks like a bunch of grapes). They are made up of epithelial mounds or pedunculated skin. They lack bony, cartilaginous, or cystic components and do not communicate to the ear canal or middle ear.
Surgical removal is for mere cosmetic purposes; it's usually done under general anesthesia using absorbable stitches to avoid the need to removes them later on. It is a relatively safe procedures with no known major complications.
