Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Although the thyroid gland is a highly vascularized organ (has a rich supply of blood vessels), hemorrhage (bleeding) or injury to the thyroid gland after a blunt trauma, like get hitting with a football, is very unlikely (luckily). Just keep an eye on it, and in case you notice unusual/exaggerated swelling or skin discoloration (after trauma, the skin will naturally develop some bruising, but if it's too prominent then you should have it examined), difficulty breathing, neck pain, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), or hoarseness, then you should seek medical attention.
