A positive anti H.pylori IgG does not distinguish between colonization (carrying the bacteria in the gut but without any active infection) or actual infection by Helicobacter pylori, and does not indicate the presence of gastrointestinal disease like an ulcer. Additionally, the presence of IgG antibodies does not differentiate between old exposure to Helicobacter pylori  and acute, ongoing infection. Additional tests, including either the urea breath test (a test whereby they measure the amount of urea in the exhaled breath; a positive result indicates the presence of h.pylori) or the stool antigen assay should be performed to determine infection status, and these tests should be done if there is a clinical indication as judged by your treating physician (i.e., according to your symptoms). After these tests are done, if they confirm h.pylori, then treatment is usually initiated.
