Janumet is composed of two main ingredients: metformin and sitagliptin. These compounds are both oral medications that help control blood sugar levels in patients with diabetes in whom diet and exercise have not been successful in controlling blood sugar levels.
Metformin works by decreasing blood glucose (sugar) production in the liver and minimizing the absorption of glucose in the intestines. So it prevents hyperglycemia or blood sugar level elevation. Sitagliptin works by regulating the levels of insulin synthesized and released by the pancreas after meals.
Janumet may cause diarrhea; the feeling of drowsiness may be related to hypoglycemia or a low blood sugar level (usually below 70 or 60); I advise you to measure your blood sugar once you feel drowsy to document if you are actually experiencing an episode of hypoglycemia. And definitely reconsult your treating physician regarding these side effects - he/she may want to adjust the dose of the medication.
