How can I get rid of my hair loss?
Aug 2, 2014

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
1st things 1st, you need to know that hair goes through natural phases of growth and shedding. If your hair has been falling out just for a few days and without leaving obvious hairless zones, it's most likely just normal hair shedding (called telogen effluvium)
Also pertinent to your age group and gender is the very common problem of iron deficiency (mostly due to menstrual bleeding; iron is important for hair and skin). If blood tests show you have iron deficiency, iron supplements will solve your problem. Another important factor is hair overprocessing (blow drying, ironing, dyeing etc) which cause the hair to weaken and fall out.
There are many types of hair loss, also called alopecia:
-Androgenic alopecia is a genetic condition. Women with this condition, called female pattern baldness, don't get hair thinning before their 40s.
-Alopecia areata is of sudden onset and causes patchy hair loss. The majority get their hair back within a few years.
-Alopecia universalis causes all body hair to fall out, including the eyebrows, eyelashes, and pubic hair.
-Trichotillomania, seen most frequently in children, is a psychological disorder in which a person pulls out one's own hair.
Other possible underlying condition is thyroid disease (poor or excess thyroid gland function; symptoms of weight loss or gain, heat or cold intolerance, nervousness or fatigue, bulging eye balls) suggest thyroid disease necessitating evaluation and treatment as needed.
