And birth control pills, or oral contraceptive pills (OCPs), are indeed the treatment of choice, assuming that the doctor treating your daughter has already done the hormonal work-up to establish the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition characterized by multiple ovarian cysts (benign bag-like structures that grow on the ovaries) with irregular menstrual cycles and possible anovulatory cycles (menstrual bleeding occurs but no egg or ovum is produced), overweight, hirsutism (excess hair especially in unusual parts of the female body like the face and neck), and acne. PCOS results from  increased synthesis and secretion of androgen (male type hormones) by the ovaries.  The optimal and radical solution to treat the manifestations of PCOS is to treat the underlying cause, which is excess androgen. The 1st choice of therapy is combined oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) which will lower androgen production by blocking steroid secretion by the ovaries, hence improving acne. If OCP are not effective, Aldactone (spironolactone), which acts directly on the androgens and lowers their levels, is added to the treatment regimen.
