Steatosis is fatty infiltration of the liver. When there's concomitant inflammation, the entity is known as steatohepatitis. Steatosis is often but not exclusively an early histological feature of alcoholic liver disease (alcohol-related fatty liver) leading to alcohol-related steatohepatitis. The non alcohol-related cases are known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Causes of fatty liver:

*Metabolic syndrome (the most common association): comprising type 2 DM, obesity with or without raised triglycerides
*Alcohol Excess
*Obesity
*Protein-calorie malnutrition
*Starvation or rapid weight loss
*Total parenteral nutrition (nutrition through the blood)
*Medication: Amiodarone,Tamoxifen, Glucocorticoids,Tetracycline, estrogens, methotrexate, thallium
*Metabolic disorders
*Jejuno-ileal bypass (a no longer used surgery in the small bowels to help with weight loss)
