Feminine hygiene

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Cyteal is an antiseptic solution based on three main ingredients which are http://www.doctissimo.fr/principe-actif-5992-HEXAMIDINE.htm">Hexamidine,  http://www.doctissimo.fr/principe-actif-7366-CHLORHEXIDINE.htm">Chlorhexidine, and http://www.doctissimo.fr/principe-actif-60-CHLOROCRESOL.htm">Chlorocrésol. This solution is used mainly for the washing and antiseptic treatment of the skin and mucous membranes in cases of bacterial infection, areas that are susceptible to get infected, and after surgery to cleanse the surgical wound. It acts by temporarily reducing the number of bacteria without actually killing the bacteria (bacteriostatic effect). Since the vaginal area contains normal flora (good bacteria, mainly lactobacillus) that are necessary to maintain a healthy acidic medium, it is not recommended to use such products for the purpose of feminine hygiene, as it may disrupt the bacterial balance in that medium, leading to overgrowth of bad bacteria or growth of fungi, and thus increasing the probability of an active infection. Add to that the fact that such products tend to dry the skin and mucous membranes, resulting in irritation and itchiness, and itching may produce small cuts in the area. I would recommend that you use something milder for the purpose of feminine hygiene.
