Dr. Zakia: how many times per day should a 2 years old boy brush his teeth using a toothpaste containing 500ppm of fluoride. Can he use the toothpaste more than once daily? Thank you
Jun 25, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), once teeth erupt it is recommended that children have their teeth brushed twice a day. For children under the age of 2 years determined to be at moderate or high risk for caries (meaning, children who who drink juice and other liquids that are not water, from a bottle or sippy cup continually throughout the day or at night, are at an increased risk of caries), it is recommended to use a smear of fluoridated toothpaste twice per day. Once a child becomes older than 2 years old should use a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste twice a day.
Toothpaste’s effects are mainly topical, but inadvertently, children may swallow some of it, which results in fluoride getting into their system. To minimize toothpaste ingestion, we advise parents to observe the following measures:

1- Limit the amount of toothpaste on the toothbrush

2- Discourage children from swallowing toothpaste, especially those made with bubblegum and other sweet flavors

3- Encourage spitting of toothpaste

4- Supervise the child while brushing until spitting can be ensured
