Does fast walking strengthen the body muscles including the back's?

Of course it does. Recommended exercises besides swimming and abdominal strengthening include walking and stretching exercises. Strengthening the abdominals is as important, for disc disease, as strengthening the back muscles. Weight lifting should be avoided though if you have back and leg pains.
