Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Zoloft (sertraline hydrochloride) and Zelax (escitalopram) are both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) with different treatment indications.
Zoloft is indicated for the treatment of:
-major depressive disorder in adults
-obsessive-compulsive disorder
-panic disorder in adults
-posttraumatic stress disorder in adults
-premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in adults
- social anxiety disorder, also known as social phobia in adults
Zelax is indicated for:
-acute and maintenance treatment of major depressive disorder in adults and in adolescents 12 to 17 years
-Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) treatment in adults.
Acute episodes of major depressive disorder require several months or longer of sustained pharmacological therapy, the target of which goes beyond controlling the acute episode. Continuing escitalopram oxalate maintenance dosage in adult patients with major depressive disorder who showed good response to treatment while taking the drug during an 8-week, acute-treatment phase demonstrated a benefit of such maintenance treatment. Nevertheless, if the use of this medication is anticipated to last for prolonged periods, periodic re-evaluation by the treating psychiatrist is necessary to determine the need for maintenance treatment.
Half the amount of the administered dose takes around 5 hours to get absorbed from the gut. The effect of the dose is expected to last for approximately 27 to 32 h, so if you take a tablet at bedtime, it should still exert its effect by the following morning, unless the dose is not up taken properly (in the event of vomiting, or if you take it with another drug that may interfere with its absorption).
