The use of a number of Herbalife products has been linked in many studies to hepatoxicity (liver toxicity), primarily due to lead accumulation in the liver. Herbalife was accused of selling products containing toxic ingredients; these products were examined and the conclusion was that a causative relationship is suggested by the evidence, which included the temporal association between exposure to Herbalife products and the development of liver injury, the negative evaluation of other potential causes of liver injury, the recovery of normal liver function when Herbalife products were discontinued, and the reoccurence of liver injury symptoms in patients who resumed using Herbalife products after recovery. These results were reproduced in several scientific studies in major laboratories.
Testosterone, the main male hormone, is derived from the cholesterol molecule, which itself is manufactured in the liver. As such, a diseased liver may eventually mean poor testosterone production, but a direct relation between the two seems to have not been investigated.
