Do anti-hypertensive medications increase the risk of arrhythmia for an asymptomatic individual who wants to control his blood pressure? Thank you in advance
Apr 12, 2013

Dr. Karim Farah Pulmonology
it depends on the type of anti-hypertensive medications and the type of arrhythmias. most medications are safe however some classes are diuretics, which might cause some electrolytes imbalances (such as potassium, magnesium or sodium) which might cause arrhythmias. but those arrhythmias are usually benign. but to be sure you need an EKG or a 24 hours holter monitoring to detect any arrhythmia you have during 24 hours at home.
you need to discuss it with your physician.
