Is the use of Formalin (formole) bad for the nails?
May 31, 2015

Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Yes, we do not recommend the topical application of formalin or formaldehyde-based hardening nail polish to the nail beds.Nail hardeners have a lot of formaldehyde type ingredients. These ingredients, though they initially produce ‘hardening’ of the nails, they later cause nail splitting, and you may end up with brittle nails with even worse splitting and fissures on the end of the nails. Also keep in mind that the softer and more brittle your nails are, the more likely they are to acquire damage secondary to the use of nail hardeners.  Softer and more brittle nails are also more susceptible to becoming dry and fissured from nail polish removers used to take the hardeners off.
