Dr. Zakia Dimassi Pediatrics
Celiac disease, or gluten intolerance, belongs to the autoimmune disease category, meaning that the body's own natural immune system produces antibodies (a kind of proteins that attacks and destroys foreign bodies) against its own tissue. In the case of Celiac disease, these antibodies are formed only upon exposure to gluten, and attack the cells that line the inside of the intestines. Complete avoidance of gluten can successfully reverse the damage caused by these antibodies to the intestinal lining, but the disease cannot be cured per se. A child affected by Celiac disease must maintain a gluten-free diet all his life. This is especially important to avoid complications of Celiac disease in terms of the absorption of essential nutrients from the intestines that are necessary for the growth and development of the bones and other organs.
