ESR stands for erythrocyte sedimentation rate. It is commonly called a "sed rate."
The meaning of the test by itself is a general interpretation what are your symptoms and for what have you done it ?
This test can be used to monitor inflammatory diseases or cancer. It is a screening test. This means it cannot be used to diagnose a specific disorder.
Reasons why an ESR or "sed rate" may be done include:
-Unexplained fevers
-Certain types of arthritis
-Muscle symptoms
-Other vague symptoms that cannot be explained
-This test may also be used to monitor whether an illness is responding to treatment.
However, the test is useful for detecting and monitoring:
-Autoimmune disorders
-Bone infections
-Certain forms of arthritis
-Inflammatory diseases that cause vague symptoms
-Tissue death
The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of High ESR levels (up to 40-80 mm/hr): .
>Rheumatic fever
>Pyelonephritis
>Collagen vascular disease
>Rheumatoid arthritis
>SLE
>Leukemia
>Myocardial infarction
There are likely to be other possible causes, so ask your doctor about your symptoms since the results areinterpreted according to symptoms
So ESR can be raised due to any chronic disease. A sudden increase indicates an infection or an inflammation. if you have a heart disease, infection or inflammation of a valve or endocarditis any infection will give high values ,It can even be rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's, any inflammatory bowel disease or rheumatoid arthritis. Tuberculosis is another possibility.
You need to discuss this with your doctor.
