27 year old male with mild case of pectus excavatum. What is the best way to correct it? exercises? surgery? vacuum bell?
Mar 18, 2013

Dr. Karim Farah Pulmonology
pectus excavatum is a congenital chest wall deformity due to sternum (bone in the mid chest) to be sunk in.
treatment is not recommended unless there are symptoms of compression on the lung and heart. ie shortness of breath on exercise or at rest, palpitations, chest pain.
specially if it is mild, ie with absence of alarming symptoms, surgery is not recommended. at young age (<18) there are chest physiotherapy & exercise that can be done but at age 27 they are not helpful.
if the reason is cosmetic then this is another issue.
