The seriousness of the condition depend on the underlying cause, but usually light short menstrual period results from nutritional deficiencies, mainly iron deficiency anemia, or if you're following a strict alimentary diet with abrupt loss of weight. The last entity affects the synthesis and production of the sexual hormones, hence leading to light periods. As you have indicated, a more detailed investigation is necessary.
